Mark grew up near Derby, and apart from going to study design and work formatively in Sheffield until 1999, he has stayed around the inspiring landscape of the Peak District, now living in Belper. The rural settings are a tonic and these are reflected in his work. His rustic themed pictures were not conscious when he started out on animal portraiture. His first animal studies were commissioned.
Mark’s background has shaped his approach. His drawing skills are self-taught and were developed before he had any formal tuition. However, his interest in photography and the influence of his HND in graphic design and illustration have refined his eye for image creation and composition.
Graphite only pencil drawings were Mark's starting point when still at school through his college years, and it wasn't until returning to animal commissions then later architectural works, that years of refinement progressed onwards from 2001 in to combining colour pencil with graphite. After graduating and working in Sheffield from 1995, Mark worked predominantly in Photoshop until a digital frustrated Mark returned to paper. Many show and exhibition filled years followed and experience of being a professional artist since 2004 has been a profound experience at times.
